and a best friend whose
sardonic wit can slice through any situation. A native of Memphis, Shepherd
won "Model of the Year" in 1968 from Stewart Models and has appeared on the
covers of Life, Vogue, Glamour, and People magazines, among others. She
moved to Los Angeles for her film debut in the highly acclaimed "The Last
Picture Show," which led to starring roles in "The Heart Break Kid,"
"Taxi
Driver,"
"Daisy Miller," "At Long Last Love," "Silver Bears" and "The Lady Vanishes."
Additional feature film credits include "Once Upon a Crime," Woody Allen's "Alice," "Married To
It," "Chances Are," and "Texasville" (which dealt with the characters thirty
years after "The Last Picture Show" concluded). Launching her
singing
career
at the age of eight by performing with her church choir, Shepherd has performed
sold out concerts throughout the country, blending rock, blues, ballads and
standards. She has recorded six albums, including "Mad About the Boy" with
Stan Getz. Her last album, "Somewhere Down the Road," featured a title cut by
Peabo Bryson. Her most recent album, "Talk Memphis to Me," takes her back to
her roots of down-home Memphis-style rythm-and-blues. Shepherd is the L'Oreal
spokesperson for the hair division, the national chairperson of the Christmas
Seals Campaign and the national chairperson of the American Lung Association.
A mother of three, Shepherd is a nutrition and physical fitness enthusiast.
Her special interests are race walking, swimming and bicycling. She recently
became engaged to
Robert Martin, who
co-wrote and co-produced her most recent album and is the musical director on
"Cybill."
